String AI API Docs

For web chat, start with WebChat in 5 Minutes. OpenAI-compatible tools use https://www.string.ink/v1 as the Base URL. Claude Code uses https://www.string.ink and must not append /v1. Authentication uses a Bearer Token.

WebChat in 5 Minutes

This page covers web chat only: sign in, send a message, choose a model, and check usage. No code and no third-party tool setup.

Step 1: Sign in

  1. Open String AI and click Sign in.
  2. Sign in with your registered email. Create an account first if you do not have one.
  3. If you reach the chat page, sign-in succeeded.

If sign-in fails, check:

  • Whether the email matches the one used at registration
  • Whether the verification email is in spam
  • Whether the browser blocked a sign-in popup
  • Whether a company network or proxy blocks the sign-in page
  • Whether a private window works

Step 2: Send the first message

Send this in the input box:

text
Who are you? In three sentences, explain what you can help me do.

Once a reply starts appearing, you can continue.

GoalExample
Write an email"Write a short leave request because I need to visit the dentist."
Translate"Translate the following into English: <paste text>"
Explain a concept"Explain what an API is in plain language."
Summarize"Summarize the following text in three sentences: <paste text>"
Rewrite"Make this paragraph more formal: <paste text>"

Start a new chat for each new task. Mixing email, translation, and summary in one chat makes later answers pick up earlier context.

Step 3: Choose a model

If you are unsure, use GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra).

UseModel
Default chat, writing, translation, and codingGPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra)
A second flagship modelGPT-6.1 Sol (gpt-6.1-sol)
Claude tools or an Anthropic-compatible APIClaude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5)

The model selector and the model list endpoint show what this account can actually use.

Step 4: Check usage

Before heavy use, check two things:

  1. Remaining quota or balance, on the account or usage page.
  2. Cost per request. Longer input, longer replies, and stronger models cost more. Many follow-up turns in one chat also grow the context.

To use less: start a new chat for a new task, and ask for an outline before going through a long document section by section.

If several projects or customers share one account, plan how to separate quotas per tenant before usage grows; the multi-tenant setup guide covers the pattern.

Step 5: Three common questions

Which model should I pick?

Start with GPT-6 Astra. Switch to GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Opus 5.5 only when you need another model, or when a tool requires a Claude model.

Why does each request cost a different amount?

Cost depends on the model, input length, reply length, uploaded files, and the context already stored in that chat. Watch the balance and the usage trend.

Do I need to install software?

No. A browser is enough for WebChat. VS Code, Codex, and Cursor setup is for developers calling the API.
